Summary: Gandhi
Comment: It must have been a very daunting task to create a biopic about Gandhi. He is still a sacrosanct figure through much of the world, an incredible amount of history happened throughout his lifetime, but also because, as a protagonist, Gandhi went from a regular lawyer to a major figurehead of peace and Indian independence- quite an arc to effectively show to an audience. However, this film does an incredible job in humanizing the man, and distilling his accomplishments to a three-hour cinematic experience.

What I appreciate about the film is how well it shows Gandhi's maturation to the figure he became, while backing up his growth with the major political events that he is most associated with (the Amristar Massacre, the Salt March, the India/Pakistan riots, etc.). Throughout the film are well-done, nuanced scenes with Gandhi, reporters, and his counsellors that help to flesh him out and explain the peaceful philosophy he tried so hard to instill in his people.

Ben Kingsley is astonishing as the man. He is never less than altogether believable. His strength is palpable, as well as his sorrow when things do not go as he meant them to, and his teachings turn to violence. Altogether this is an incredibly distinguished, entertaining and vital film. Everyone needs to know this man's story. See it and keep him with you.

Summary: Good Acting
Comment: Gandhi was lots of fun..I love the parts where there is beatings and he
just turns the other cheek...I wish there could have been more car chases
but I think it may have taken away from the story...Gandhi was a cool dude
he was smarter than most the people he hung out with...What makes him better than Batman and other superheroes is that he was a real dude not just a guy from a cartoon story...I never figured out who his girlfriend was....maybe I missed that part...Gandhi was old school but he could have been big today..yes it was a good movie for those of us who can really understand what Gandhi had up his sleeve...he was like James Bond without the babes and cars.....Gandhi was the Man in his day...

Summary: Monumental Film Making Worthy of It's Subject
Comment: Watching Richard Attenborough's masterpiece bio-epic is both an uplifting and draining experience. The performance of Ben Kingsley as Gandhi is one of those rare moments in film history where an actor seems to inhabit the character so completely allowing the viewer to get a deeper personal experience of an historical character.
Perfectly blending the political history with the personal story , this movie at 3 hours is an investment of time that pays dividends rarely found on a screen. I recently watched this again after several years and was just as moved by it as when it was first released.
Many filmmakers would go for the sentimental approach and try to create myths around their subject. In Gandhi there is a an element of that but the film will stand up to time because the portrayal is historically accurate and the subject at the heart of the film is a mythical character beyond the need of a boost from the movie.

Summary: Ben Kingsley at His Best as Gandhi
Comment: This is a movie everyone who can should see. It is deeply moving through most of it. Some viewers will see humor in it as well. The superlatives are too numerous to list in a short review. Some viewers will be disappointed in spots. To be more realistic, the film would need to exlore Gandhi's mere mortal side (as starters, his wife suggests he cheated on his celebacy oath a few times). It also would need to exlore his showman side (as starters, he wore his loincloth when visiting England in very cold weather).
